How to turn bridged funds into native gas

To use bridged funds for a transaction, you may first need to swap some of them for the destination chain’s gas token, the asset used to pay network fees. A bridge can move value between chains without giving you that token. The result is funds in your wallet, but no way to send or swap them yet.

Why can’t I use my bridged token to pay gas?

A bridged token is often a version of an asset represented on another chain. It may have the same name or ticker as a familiar coin, but that does not make it the chain’s gas token. For example, a bridged stablecoin may be spendable in an app while the network still requires its own token for fees.

Check the destination chain and the exact token shown in your wallet before you move funds. Some bridges offer an option to deliver a small amount of gas with the transfer, while others only send the asset you selected. For a broader look at how transfer routes differ, see this guide to choosing a ParaSwap cross-chain route. The right choice depends on the tokens and chains involved.

How do I turn bridged funds into gas?

If you can already make transactions on the destination chain, swap a small part of the bridged balance for its gas token on a supported exchange or wallet. Then use that gas to move or swap the rest. If you have no gas at all, a normal swap may not be possible because the swap itself requires a fee.

Before bridging, check whether the service can send gas on arrival or whether your wallet supports paying fees with another token. These features depend on the route and the app. A transfer route that delivers a little gas may cost more overall, but it can save you from having to arrange a separate transfer later.

A simple check before you send is:

  • Confirm the destination network and the token you will receive.
  • Check whether the route includes gas, and what asset it uses.
  • Keep enough of the destination gas token for the first swap or transfer.
  • Compare the total fee and exchange rate, not just the quoted bridge fee.

What if I have no gas on the destination chain?

You need a way to get a small amount of the native gas token there before you can make an ordinary transaction. Options include choosing a bridge route that delivers gas, asking someone to send a small amount, or withdrawing the gas token from a service that supports the destination network. Each route has its own fees, timing and requirements.

Check the network name carefully when withdrawing or sending. A token sent on the wrong chain may not appear where you expect, and recovering it can be difficult or impossible. Once a small gas balance arrives, swap only what you need at first. You can then use the bridged funds for the rest of your activity.

The practical rule is simple: plan for gas on the destination chain before bridging. If the route does not provide it, arrange a small amount separately; a large bridged balance does not help if you cannot pay for the first transaction.
