Bitcoin fell below $84,000 on Oct. 7 as oil climbed after attacks on tankers in the Strait of Hormuz, and crypto liquidations rose to $547 million. The sell-off hit smaller tokens harder, while rising Treasury yields and a stronger dollar added pressure on markets. CoinDesk’s market report said Brent crude topped $101 a barrel and liquidations jumped 235% over 24 hours, citing data from CoinGlass.
How widely did the sell-off spread?
Losses were steeper among smaller tokens than among the largest coins, CoinDesk reported. Its CoinDesk 80 index, which tracks a broad basket of smaller tokens, fell nearly 4% over 24 hours. The CoinDesk 5, made up of the largest cryptocurrencies, fell 2.5%. Decentralized finance tokens dropped almost 6%, while the outlet’s Memecoin Index lost around 5%.
Bitcoin slipped below $84,000 shortly after midnight UTC. Ether positions made up $174 million of the reported liquidations, and ether was down 3.5% since midnight. Liquidations happen when exchanges automatically close leveraged positions—trades made with borrowed funds—after losses leave too little collateral to keep them open.
What do the liquidation figures show?
The $547 million total shows how much leveraged trading was forcibly closed across crypto over the 24-hour period, according to CoinGlass data cited by CoinDesk. It does not by itself show that all those traders were betting on prices rising. CoinDesk’s derivatives snapshot also showed futures trading volume up 16% to $182.85 billion, while open interest—the value of outstanding futures contracts—slipped 1% to $152.60 billion.
CoinDesk said those figures pointed to active repositioning rather than a wave of new bullish bets. Its report also noted that U.S. spot bitcoin exchange-traded funds took in $119 million on Tuesday, their fourth day of inflows in five sessions, according to SoSoValue. Those inflows had held up going into the drop, even as oil, yields and the dollar climbed.
