Reap adds Monad card support, with Meru first in Latin America

Reap says it is adding support for the Monad blockchain to its stablecoin card infrastructure, and Meru will be the first to launch a card program on the integration in Latin America. The companies say Monad’s fast transaction finality could let card issuers check stablecoin balances within the time available to approve a payment. Reap’s October 22 announcement did not give a launch date for Meru’s program.

How could Monad change card payments?

Monad’s transactions reach deterministic finality in 600 milliseconds, according to Reap. Finality means a transaction is confirmed and treated as settled. Reap says the speed could let an issuer check a customer’s stablecoin balance onchain before approving a card payment.

Card networks expect issuers to confirm funds within seconds of a payment starting. With slower blockchains, issuers may need to keep money in prefunded accounts or use short-term credit while they wait for an onchain transaction to settle. Reap says Monad’s timing could reduce that reliance. The announcement describes this as the purpose of the integration; it does not report measured savings or a live payment volume.

What will Meru offer first?

Meru is a financial app serving Latin America. It will be the first company to launch a card program using Reap’s Monad integration, according to the announcement. Meru says the program is intended to let users spend digital dollars in everyday transactions, extending its stablecoin services beyond saving and moving money across borders.

Reap says it handles card authorization, processing, compliance and operations for its partners. Adding Monad gives those partners another blockchain option for stablecoin card programs. The announcement says Reap’s existing Visa collaboration supports programs across more than 100 markets, but does not specify where Meru’s card will be available or which stablecoins it will support.

When will the card program launch?

The companies have not announced a launch date. Reap’s statement says Meru will be first to launch on the integration, while Reap’s newsroom post reports the Monad support announcement on October 22. It also says Meru operates in Bolivia, Colombia, Mexico, Peru, Paraguay, the Dominican Republic and Spain, among other markets. The statement does not identify which of those countries will get the card first.
