Starknet asks holders to study an independent post-quantum chain

Starknet has opened a seven-day poll asking STRK holders whether to study making the network an independent, post-quantum Layer 1. The vote is non-binding: a “yes” would start research, not trigger a move. Starknet’s governance forum post says the poll is meant to gauge interest in exploring the idea.

Starknet is currently a Layer 2, a network built on Ethereum. The question matters because parts of Starknet’s security rely on Ethereum, including its bridge and data availability—the way network data is stored and shared. The proposal says those parts depend on Ethereum’s timeline for becoming resistant to quantum attacks. The Block reported on the poll and the dependencies it aims to address.

What would the vote decide?

The vote asks whether Starknet should explore becoming an independent Layer 1, or base blockchain, with more control over its own security. It does not approve a transition. If holders vote “yes,” research would begin, followed by more detailed proposals and further polls, according to the forum post.

A “no” result would leave Starknet’s post-quantum work on its current Layer 2 path. A “neutral” result would keep the discussion open until more answers are available. The poll runs for seven days, and its results will be visible when it closes.

What parts of Starknet already handle quantum risks?

Starknet’s forum post says the network already uses STARK proofs, a type of cryptographic proof based on hash functions, and that user accounts can adopt post-quantum signatures without a protocol upgrade. But the bridge to Ethereum and data availability remain tied to Ethereum’s infrastructure and upgrade schedule.

The forum says there is no timeline yet for becoming an independent Layer 1. It also says STRK would remain the token under either path, with no new token, and that bridges between Ethereum and Starknet would stay open.

What happens if holders back more research?

A “yes” would begin a research effort, not settle how an independent chain would work. The proposal says that effort would lead to more detailed plans and polls. Until then, the vote measures whether STRK holders want Starknet to study taking more control over security as quantum risks shape its plans.
